For over 65 years, the Richey family has been dedicated to the pedorthic needs of the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast. Since Franz Richey opened our first facility in 1938, Richey & Co. has worked closely with doctors and physical therapists to help them meet the needs of their patients.

Today, Richey & Co. has over twelve Certified Pedorthists in six Board-Accredited pedorthic facilities and is still growing. Each one of our facilities has at least two Certified or board-eligible Pedorthists on staff. Many have orthotists on staff who can address AFO needs. We also have in-house orthopedic technicians who fabricate all of our foot orthoses and shoe modifications from our state-of-the art Board-accredited fabrication lab in Charlottesville, Virginia. We are the only Board-accredited lab in Virginia.

Our difference, however, lies in our ability to encourage high levels of patient compliance with a doctor’s prescription. Unlike other pedorthic facilities, Richey & Co. carries a large selection of fashionable styles that are foot friendly. We offer the patient shoes they want to wear, not just have to wear.

As Franz Richey, our founder, used to say, “Even the best shoes don’t help if they stay in the closet.” We help complete the circle of care by carrying a very broad range of pedorthic and comfort shoe styles that we can modify or enhance to meet the doctor’s medical goals while simultaneously meeting the fashion concerns of the patient.

We Can Help Even When We Don’t Make the Orthoses
We offer a complete orthosis fabrication service, specializing in rigid, semi-rigid and accommodative orthoses, and we take the time to fit the orthoses to the shoes to ensure that your patient gets the required efficacy of their device.

However, many of our referring doctors make their own orthoses. These doctors don’t want us to even mention orthoses to the patient. They send their patients to us to ensure they get properly fitted footwear and that the footwear is fitted to the doctor’s orthoses. This is our specialty and we are happy to do it!

In other parts of the country, some doctors resist sending their orthosis patients to Pedorthists for shoes for fear the Pedorthist would disturb the orthosis relationship. This is never a problem at Richey & Co.

If you provide the orthosis, we can still help you help your patients by offering the largest assortment of shoes available in a store staffed by fitting experts.

What Can We Do For You?
We take care of your patients. Making your patients happy with expert service and attractive shoe options, reflects positively on the whole process.

We provide the proper shoes to enhance the orthotic modalities or surgeries you prescribe and/or provide. The wrong shoes can sub-optimize (or subvert) an otherwise perfect orthosis or complicate the healing of a foot surgery. We round out the services you provide and make sure your work is not compromised by improper shoes.

We help build referrals for your practice. The ACFAS found that while 66% of the adult population has foot problems, only 7% go see a doctor. The other 59% are among those shopping in our stores. We get hundreds of inquiries a year about local foot health professionals.

We make orthoses on a wholesale basis. Put our Accredited Lab to the test…from functional polypropylene to accommodative cork and Plastazote, let our full service lab give you a quote on your foot orthoses.

We provide support for our wholesale orthoses. Use your local Richey & Co. location to provide free adjustments and follow-up for the devices made at our lab. This frees-up your staff’s time and your waiting rooms to allow you to see more new patients.

We offer free prescription pads and custom forms to facilitate your work. Our standardized forms help reduce the opportunities for miscommunication. We provide the design and printing management, resulting in one less administrative task for your staff.

We can also supply patient education materials and participate in educational events. We provide staff for foot screenings, samples for medical presentations, background data for media events, and other value-added services. We can help you promote your practice and prepare for other special events.

Franz Richey opened our first store in 1938 in Washington, DC. Franz offered his personalized shoe service to customers-fitting their individual feet to the best shoes possible. Local foot doctors sent their patients to Franz with confidence because they knew Franz would provide the proper footwear best suited to the individual's needs.

Franz's son, Rives, and grandson, Brett now continue the traditions of personalized shoe service at Richey & Co. — expanding the range of products and services available-and building a team of expert fitters and Certified Pedorthists to help customers with all of their footwear needs.
